About our President & Founder:Dave Smith, CAP

Dave founded Heaton Smith in 2009 with a mission to democratize sophisticated gift planning expertise for all nonprofits. With over 30 years in philanthropy, he has worked with hundreds of nonprofit institutions and donors throughout the country and across industries. Inspired by his mother’s legacy of generosity, he is passionate about honoring donors’ legacies through strategic gift planning and nonprofit stewardship.

Philip M. Purcell, J.D. | Senior Consultant

Phil previously served as vice president for planned giving at the Ball State University Foundation and director of gift planning for the Central Indiana Community Foundation. He has worked with Heaton Smith clients since the company’s inception. As an attorney and published author in charitable gift planning, he serves on the Internal Revenue Service Tax Exempt Organization Advisory Council. Phil has been a featured speaker at more than 100 continuing education programs for professional advisors.

Donna Bandelloni has served as director of gift planning at leading health care organizations, including the California Pacific Medical Center Foundation and the Lucile Packard Foundation for Children’s Healthcare. She brings more than 25 years of experience to her role, having also held senior positions at Merrill Lynch Trust, Wells Fargo Charitable Management and Mellon Financial, where she successfully expanded charitable services to the nonprofit sector. She serves on the board of the American Council on Gift Annuities.

She is a past president of the Northern California Planned Giving Council, a recipient of the Phil Hoffmire Service Award and a member of the California Bar.

Robert previously served as vice president for development at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, where he led a 95-person team that raised more than $200 million annually, including more than $35 million in realized planned gifts. His career includes executive director positions at Ohio State University’s James Cancer Center Foundation, the Memorial Health University Medical Center Foundation, and Fox Chase Cancer Center. He brings more than 40 years of experience serving health care and academic institutions.

Jennifer is an accomplished advancement leader with more than 20 years of experience in major and planned gifts, campaign leadership, and team management. Most recently, as Associate Vice President of Advancement for ChautauquaInstitution, she led a team of eight professionals while managing a personal portfolio of high-net-worth donors. She joined Chautauqua in 2019 as Director of Gift Planning, where she built the Institution's planned giving program from the ground up, establishing its first charitable gift annuity program and securing millions annually in new gift commitments. Prior to Chautauqua, Stitely served as Divisional Director of Planned Giving for The National Capital and Virginia Division of The Salvation Army, where she led a remote team responsible for securing more than $20 million in planned gift commitments. Throughout her career, she has consistently exceeded fundraising goals across healthcare, human services, and cultural

organizations.

 

Jenny has held the CFRE designation since 2010, the CAP® since 2021, and earned her DAFP® certificate in 2025. She has served in numerous volunteer leadership roles, including Conference Chair for the 2022 National Capital Gift Planning Council's Planned Giving Days and President of the Chesapeake Planned Giving Council. A graduate of Towson University with a degree in Music Performance, Jenny lives in Westminster, Maryland, with her husband, Tim, and enjoys reading, singing, and spending time with their four grown children.

Joe Chickey brings more than thirty years of experience in the charitable planning

arena. His background spans work with capital campaigns, major gifts, strategic

planning, endowments and foundations. He is also widely respected for his expertise in

gift planning, which he developed over fifteen years working with hospitals, universities,

independent schools and environmental organizations.

 

For nearly a decade and a half, Joe served as the senior vice president and senior

consultant at Sharpe Group, a planned giving consulting firm. His clients included St.

Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Purdue University, Vanderbilt Medical Center, Lake

Forest Academy, University of Oklahoma, and The Wilderness Society. Previously, Joe

served as a major and planned giving officer for both the University of Illinois

Foundation, where he acted as the lead fundraiser for a $1.5 billion capital campaign,

and at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, where he spearheaded a $500

million capital campaign. He also worked as a philanthropic advisor for St. Jude

Children’s Research Hospital. Throughout all of these roles, he administered charitable

remainder trusts, lead trusts, gift annuities, life estates and IRA gifts.

Joe also spent fifteen years as a bank trust officer for various financial institutions,

focusing on estate and financial planning, asset management and charitable planning

for nonprofit endowments, family foundations and high-net-worth clients. While serving as a vice president and trust officer for Regions Morgan Keegan, he worked with more

than 125 charities throughout the Southeastern United States as a leader in the

Endowments and Foundations Group.

 

He lives in Asheville, North Carolina, but often travels widely for speaking engagements,

sharing his insights on planned giving and other topics to estate planning councils,

community foundations, AFP, CASE and CGP groups. He has spoken to the Chicago

Council on Planned Giving and the National Capital Gift Planning Council as well as

performed onsite training for Purdue University, the University of Texas System and the

University of Oklahoma. Joe has also served as a board member of the National

Association of Charitable Gift Planners and is a current member of the Leadership

Institute. Joe earned a bachelor’s degree in finance from Rhodes College and a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Illinois.
